Weekend Holding

Prop Firm Trader research desk

Weekend holding means keeping a trading position open from Friday's close through Monday's reopen, when markets have limited or no liquidity. Prop firms vary: some allow it for every account type, some restrict it to certain evaluation phases or challenge models, and others auto-close all positions at Friday close as standard policy.

Why it matters

Whether weekend holding is permitted shapes which strategies work on an account: swing traders need it, scalpers and day traders rarely care. Firms also differ on consequence: some treat an open weekend position as a hard breach that closes the account, others simply auto-close the trade with no penalty (a soft breach at most). Read the specific policy for your account type rather than assuming a firm-wide default.

Example

A trader on an account type where weekend holding is permitted keeps a EUR/USD position open Friday into Monday to capture an expected multi-day trend, accepting gap risk and possible swap charges in exchange for not missing the move. On a different account model, where weekend positions are auto-closed, the system flattens the trade at Friday close with no breach recorded, though the position no longer benefits from any Monday move.

Common misconception

Traders assume "weekend holding allowed" means no consequences at all. In reality, gap risk, slippage on reopening, and swap or overnight financing charges (unless a swap-free add-on applies) still apply even when holding is permitted. A weekend gap can also trigger a genuine max-loss breach, which several firms confirm is valid even though the trader had no control over the move. Many also assume the rule is uniform across a firm, when evaluation phases, funded or "master" accounts, and specific challenge models (Flex, Zero, Instant, Swing) can each carry different weekend holding permissions under the same brand.

Risk disclaimer: Trading carries a substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for everyone. Prop-firm evaluations charge fees and most traders do not pass. Nothing here is financial advice; figures can change, so verify current terms with the firm before purchasing.
