NinjaTrader
NinjaTrader is a desktop trading platform built for futures markets, offering charting, order execution, and automated strategy tools through its own scripting language, NinjaScript. In prop trading, funded accounts connect to NinjaTrader through a separate data feed provider such as Rithmic, Tradovate, or CQG, since the platform itself does not host execution or issue funding.
Why it matters
Many futures prop firms list NinjaTrader as a supported third-party platform, letting traders keep familiar charting layouts and NinjaScript automation on an evaluation or funded account instead of learning a proprietary interface. Which feed sits behind the connection (Rithmic, Tradovate, or CQG) affects connection stability and lag, and firms sometimes restrict NinjaTrader to only one of those feeds, so confirming compatibility before setup matters for fast futures execution.
Example
A trader passes a futures evaluation, then finds NinjaTrader login credentials on the firm's dashboard. They launch NinjaTrader Desktop, open Connections, add the configured connection using those credentials, set the account type as instructed, and once the connection indicator turns green they trade the account using Chart Trader, SuperDOM, and any NinjaScript indicators they've built or installed.
Common misconception
Traders often assume NinjaTrader is itself a prop firm or a single bundled service that comes automatically with a funded account. It's actually independent software requiring its own installation and login, paired with a separate data feed subscription (Rithmic, Tradovate, or CQG) that the prop firm chooses or offers as an option. Some firms tie NinjaTrader to only one specific feed, so a trader can't assume any feed works with it.
